MEET THE CONTRACTOR 1
There are so many people on site at Blackheath Halls at the moment and our contractors Sykes, employ people with a wealth of experience amongst them. That being the case, we thought it would be interesting to find out a little more about the team transforming our venue starting with Melvyn, the Site Manager!
1. Tell us a little bit about what you do at Sykes
Well I actually recently retired, so this is a bit of an encore! I’m overseeing the first few weeks on site, whilst our Site Manager, Paul finishes up a project at V&A Museum and he’ll take over from there. We’re in the early stages, with strip-out works now complete and scaffolding well underway.
2. How long have you been at Sykes and where are some of the notable sites you’ve worked on?
I joined Sykes over 15 years ago, starting at the Tate Modern. Over the years, I’ve been based at the likes of the Foreign & Commonwealth Office, London School of Economics and also the Royal Academy of Arts for a 4-year stint. I have worked everywhere from prisons to the Royal Palaces!
3. If you could name a seat in Blackheath Halls after anyone, who would it be and why?
I would name a seat in the Halls after Clive Mendonca, he was a Charlton Athletic footballer and he dragged Charlton out of the lower divisions back into the top league. Being a season ticket holder for many years, this made it all worthwhile going out in the rain and snow.
