Participants in SongEasel‘s 2025 Young Artist Programme present a resplendent programme of Lebendige Lieder (Living Song) that captures the utopian ideals and cross-cultural dialogue of the current recital series DREAMS: A Place.

SongEasel Young Artists perform an inspired programme combining our Schumann wedding anniversary theme with an exploration of what future song recitals might look like, from cabaret songs to Calamity Jane…. Prepare for heartstrings to be strummed, and to be thoroughly entertained!

Soprano JJ Lam read Computer Science at Trinity College, Cambridge, where she sang in the chapel choir under Stephen Layton. After a brief career in finance, she retrained as a performer, graduating in 2024 from the MA Musical Theatre course at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. She has also trained at Mountview, New Earth Theatre, National Youth Theatre and Morley Opera School. JJ was selected as a 2025 Serena Fenwick artist with British Youth Opera, and sang the national anthem at a televised Women’s Six Nations rugby fixture in April 2025. An experienced recitalist and choral soloist, she is currently the Soprano Choral Scholar at St George’s Beckenham and West London Chorus. JJ recently made their professional theatrical debut as Pitti-Sing in The Mikado at Tabard Theatre, Chiswick. This summer she will be singing in the Chorus in the National Gilbert & Sullivan Opera Company at Buxton Opera House.

Mezzo-soprano Samantha Lewis is a Masters and APD graduate of The Royal Birmingham Conservatoire. Previously, she trained in Veterinary Science at Harper Adams University. Upon graduating with distinction, she was awarded the Postgraduate Course Prize and the St Clare Barfield Rosebowl for Operatic Distinction. She has performed many roles, including Cendrillon Cendrillon and Hänsel Hänsel and Gretel; she was also a mentee on The Royal Opera House’s Jette Parker Artist Programme mentorship scheme. She is currently enjoying experimenting with British Sign Language within her performances, in which she debuted at the Llangollen eisteddfod’s International Pendine Voice of the Future, in which she got to the semifinal. She also was semi-finalist in The London Song Festival 2022 and additionally, won The Edward Brooke’s English Song Prize. She is also looking forward to developing the role of the Mother and Witch Hänsel and Gretel with The Merry Opera Company.

Eva Stone-Barney is a Canadian mezzo-soprano pursuing her Masters in Vocal Studies at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, where she studies with Samantha Malk. She holds degrees in vocal performance and musicology from McGill University and the University of Toronto, where her SSHRC-funded thesis explored innovation in classical vocal recital. Recent highlights include performing as Ramiro in scenes from Mozart’s La finta giardiniera (Guildhall), as chorus in Strauss’ Die Fledermaus (Guildhall), and as New Ofglen in The Handmaid’s Tale (Banff Centre). Passionate about art song and recital programming, Eva has recently participated in song projects at Guildhall led by pianists Iain Burnside and Bretton Brown. She has performed major choral works with professional ensembles across Canada, and twice represented Quebec in the National Youth Choir. She is a 2024–2025 Jackman Scholar (LGAC) and was named a 2021 RBC Emerging Artist Fellow by the Association for Opera in Canada. Beyond performance, Eva is an active music scholar and writer.

British-Italian baritone Maximilian Catalano is currently pursuing his Master’s degree at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama under the tutelage of David Pollard. Having completed a degree in International Relations and Politics from Cardiff University, he decided to pursue a career in classical singing. Since then he has performed in recitals organised by Alistair McGowan, Dylan Perez, Iain Burnside and Graham Johnson. Maximilian maintains relationships with choral societies in Tring, Hertfordshire, Buckinghamshire and Hillingdon as well as performing for the Adbaston Concert Society. In 2024 Maximilian made his operatic debut as Schaunard La bohème (Aylesbury Opera). He has since performed in Die Fledermaus (Guildhall Opera School), Götterdämmerung (Regents Opera) and chorus in The Flying Dutchman (Opera Holland Park). He has also had the honour of singing Raffael and Adam in the Indian debut of Haydn The Creation. This summer Maximilian will join the Waterperry Opera Festival as part of their Young Artist Programme.

Pianist Alicia Hernández Huebra completed her Bachelor’s Degree at the Real Conservatorio Superior de Música de Madrid under Maestro Iván Cítera. She is the pianist of the Madrid Youth Orchestra and has accompanied the children’s choir Menudos Cantantes since 2021. In 2023, she was selected as a répétiteur for the third edition of the Teatro Real Young Artist Programme Crescendo, receiving coaching from pianists Patricia Barton and Carmen Santoro. She accompanied masterclasses by Martin Winkler, Sabina Puértolas, and Jacques Imbrailo, and worked as répétiteur for Amahl and the Night Visitors in the Teatro Real Junior season. In July 2024, she served as répétiteur for The Marriage of Figaro at the Berlin Opera Academy, playing harpsichord for the recitatives under conductor Tom Seligman and stage director Caterina Panti Liberovici. In December 2024, she was Musical Director and Pianist for the Winter Opera Scenes at Goodenough College. In April 2025, Alicia took part in the Georg Solti Accademia for répétiteurs in Italy, where she worked with renowned coaches including Jonathan Papp, Anthony Legge, and James Vaughan (La Scala). She is currently in the second year of a Master’s in Piano Accompaniment at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama in London, studying with Andrew West and Bretton Brown. She has accompanied masterclasses by Dominic Wheeler and Gerald Finley, and collaborates regularly with pianists such as Iain Burnside and Graham Johnson, being an active member of his Song Guild. She also accompanies voice and drama classes for professors John Ramster and Yvonne Kenny. In July 2025, she will be Musical Director for a fully staged production of Le nozze di Figaro at Goodenough College. Alicia was awarded Second Prize in the Jubilee Accompaniment Prize 2025, and she has been offered a place on the Opera Course at Guildhall, where she will begin her Artist Diploma as a repetiteur in 2025/26.

Welsh pianist and organist Aeron Preston read Music at St John’s College, Cambridge, and worked as a secondary Music teacher for a number of years. He also accompanied a number of choirs in Mid Wales, including Cantorion Llandrindod, Montgomery County Music Festival Choir, Kington Choral Society, and Brecon Singers.  In 2019, he attended the Wales International Academy of Voice in Cardiff to train as a répétiteur, gaining a PGDip with Distinction. He continued his training the following year at the National Opera Studio in London. He now works as a freelance accompanist and répétiteur, working with choral societies, opera companies, and schools. Recently, he has worked with Harlow Chorus, Beckenham Chorale, Kingston Choral Society, Mid Wales Opera, Garsington Opera, Grange Park Opera, and New London Opera Group. He is one of a team of organists at St George’s Church in Beckenham, and is an Associate of the Royal College of Organists.

Pianist Paul St-Georges is completing his Guildhall Artist Master’s in Piano Accompaniment under the guidance of distinguished professors Bretton Brown and Carole Presland. He has performed at Wigmore Hall, Barbican Hall, and Milton Court, and was a finalist for the Jubilee Accompaniment Prize — the most prestigious award for collaborative pianists at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. His work spans chamber music, art song, historical performance, and contemporary repertoire, including collaborations with composers on new works. This summer, Paul has been awarded a full scholarship to the Franz-Schubert-Institut in Austria and will also study harpsichord at Domaine Forget in Canada. Originally from Canada, Paul’s early musical foundation includes 12 years with Les Petits Chanteurs de Laval, touring internationally, and formative studies with pianist and conductor Philippe Ostiguy. He later trained with innovative pianist Kate Ryder, which sparked a deep interest in contemporary and experimental music.

Scottish-born Beth Haughan is a pianist and teacher working across London and Birmingham. She works as both a soloist and in collaboration with many singers and instrumentalists, having performed in venues such as the Southbank Centre, the Wigmore Hall and the Victoria and Albert Museum. She held a Weingarten Scholarship at the Liszt Ferenc Academy in Budapest, where she studied with Gábor Farkas. Previously she gained a First Class BMus (Hons) from the Royal College of Music and an MMus (Distinction) from the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, studying with Gordon Fergus Thompson, Margaret Fingerhut and Pascal Nemirovski. Recent highlights include being a Young Artist at Leeds Lieder Festival, performing Dvorák’s Piano Quintet at a pre-CBSO Showcase in Birmingham’s Symphony Hall and winning the Dennis Horner Accompanist Prize at the Junior Kathleen Ferrier Society Awards. She is currently studying on the Advanced Postgraduate Diploma in Professional Performance course at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire where she has won the Leamington prize, Sylvia Cleaver Chamber prize and all the major song accompanist prizes.
