Music Appreciation: Late Haydn – Early Beethoven

£17 | £170 whole series
The Hearn Recital Room
Took place on Mon 13 Oct, 10am

Master and Pupil Together [1790 – 1800]

This term, Matthew explores a pivotal decade in classical music — the 1790s — through the works of its two greatest composers.

While Beethoven’s later masterworks often overshadow his predecessors, this series reveals a different story. We begin with Haydn at the height of his powers, having left the Esterházy court as the undisputed master of his era. Meanwhile, the young Beethoven arrives in Vienna in 1792, initially hoping to study under the great master (still years away from his revolutionary Eroica Symphony).

What to Expect

Haydn’s Mature Masterworks:
The 12 London Symphonies
String Quartets Op. 76
Late masses and oratorios
Chamber music from his final creative period

Beethoven’s Promising Beginnings:
Piano sonatas performed by Matthew
Piano trios and the Opus 18 string quartets
Two early romances for violin
Symphony No. 1 and the first three piano concertos (the third premiered at the turn of the century)

Mon 13 Oct will focus on: Haydn’s return visit to London 1793, Symphonies 100 (Military, 101 (Clock) and 102 (Miracle)
